Efficient council may rent out office space after hot desking

Ipswich Borough Council, which runs its offices on a
hot desking basis, is considering renting out 20 per cent of its space as it can operate without it.
According to the Ipswich Evening Star, the authority is currently deciding whether to offer one of its five floors at Grafton House in the Suffolk town to other businesses.
It may be that its decision to deploy
hot desking technology has resulted in a significant improvement in efficiency, meaning the fifth floor is now redundant.
Council deputy leader and finance spokesman John Carnell told the newspaper: "With different ways of working and
hot desking you find much of the building is empty much of the day."
At present there are 520 workstations at the council's headquarters, but with just 486 staff working on a
hot desking system a large portion are unused at any time.
Monmouthshire Council recently announced that it is planning to build a new office development to use as its base which will operate
hot desking and could save the authority millions of pounds.
